A set of six small steel files with coarse teeth for shaping and cleaning up details in wood carvings. Each file is listed at 3 × 140 mm (about 0.12 × 5.5 in), and the set covers six shapes: flat, half-round, round, square, triangular and a pointed flat file. The files have black molded grips with a yellow insert and come in a clear plastic sleeve with a pocket for each file, as pictured. Each order is one set of six.

What it does

  • Six shapes for different cuts: flat and pointed flat files for flat faces and narrow slots, half-round and round files for curves and holes, and square and triangular files for corners and V-cuts.
  • Coarse teeth for wood: the manufacturer lists a coarse, single-cut tooth pattern and woodworking as the purpose. The files are not made for hardened steel.
  • Small size: listed file length 140 mm (about 5.5 in) and width 3 mm (about 0.12 in). Whether the length includes the grip is not listed by the manufacturer.
  • Molded grips: black grips with a yellow insert and a yellow collar, as pictured; the grip material is not listed.
  • Sleeve storage: a clear plastic sleeve with a pocket for each file and a hang tab, as pictured.

Use & care

Check the set when your order arrives and contact us through the contact page if a file is damaged or missing. File tips are pointed: store the set in its sleeve and file away from your body. Keep out of reach of children. Hold the work in a vise or clamp so both hands stay behind the file, and cut on the push stroke with light, even pressure. Not for use on hardened steel; the coarse teeth are cut for wood and soft materials. Brush wood dust out of the teeth with a stiff brush after use, keep the files dry, and wipe them with a lightly oiled cloth before storing.

Your questions, answered

Which shapes are in the set?

Six: flat, half-round, round, square, triangular and a pointed flat file, as pictured.

How long are the files?

The manufacturer lists a file length of 140 mm (about 5.5 in) and a width of 3 mm (about 0.12 in). It does not say whether the length includes the grip.

Are they for wood or metal?

The manufacturer lists woodworking as the purpose and a coarse, single-cut tooth pattern. Use them on wood and soft materials; they are not for hardened steel.

How much does the set weigh?

The manufacturer gives three figures: 1.8 oz (50 g) net, 3.5 oz (100 g) product weight and 4.2 oz (120 g) with the package.

How do I store them?

In the clear sleeve they come in, one file per pocket, so the pointed tips stay covered and the teeth do not knock against each other.
